What is the Trail? > Purpose & Significance

As outlined in the legislation and further articulated in the trail management plan, the purpose of the Star-Spangled Banner Trail is threefold:

  • To protect the sites, landscapes, and routes that help us understand the people, events, and ideals associated with the National Anthem and the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake Bay region;
  • To provide visitors with opportunities to learn about how the War of 1812 is relevant today; and
  • To foster opportunities for land- and water-based recreation and heritage tourism.
